Build a sequence and start a campaign
A sequence is the emails you write. A campaign sends a sequence to a list from your mailboxes. Write the sequence first.
Write the sequence
- Go to Sequences and choose New. Start from a template if you like, or write your own.
- Add email steps. Set the delay in days between steps.
- Use merge fields such as the first name. If a field is empty for someone, that person is held until you fix it.
- Use Send test to me on a step to see the real email in your own inbox.
Versions A to E
Each email step can have up to five versions, A to E, to compare subjects and copy. Add one with Add version C and so on, in order. Live versions are shared out equally between contacts, and a contact keeps the same version on a retry.
Auto-optimize is off by default and set per step. When on, it watches reply rate (or opens, or clicks) and pauses a version that is clearly worse. It needs at least 30 sends per version and uses 100 by default. The last live version is never paused. You can pause or bring back a version yourself on the campaign Overview, under A/B test.
Branching: send a step depending on what a contact did
A step can depend on the previous email. Choose a condition on the step: opened, clicked, or got one of your reply labels, each within a number of days (1 to 30). Within sends as soon as it happens and otherwise skips after the deadline. Wait holds until the day, then checks once.
If the condition is not met the step is skipped and the contact goes to the branch target you set, or to the next step. Branching works on email steps only. Opens and clicks only count if tracking is on.
Start a campaign
- Go to Campaigns and create one. The wizard has four parts: Who, What, How and Review.
- Review lists what stops you, in plain words. Typical blockers are no mailing address, no connected mailbox, a mailbox still warming up, or no verified contacts. Fix each one and the list shortens.
- Start. Cold email is paced slowly on purpose: gaps between sends from one mailbox, a gap between mailboxes on one domain, and a quiet start to each day. Do not expect everything to go out at once.
Test the campaign first
A campaign test sends real emails to test inboxes and reports sent, open, click and reply rates and a breakdown by version. It sends up to 10 emails per test, runs 3 times a campaign a day, and shares each mailbox's 3 daily Diagnose slots.
What stops a campaign
Fullturn pauses a campaign on its own if hard bounces or spam complaints get too high. See When something says blocked or needs attention.
